~Children are made readers on the laps of their parents~ (1994)
~Emilie Buchwald~

This website will help you find useful links, book lists, activities to do at home, and information regarding literacy. Below are some helpful tips from Reading Specialists.

*The best way to improve a child's reading ability is through practice. The more a child reads, the better he/she will become at it.

* Read fiction and nonfiction text.

* To boost your child’s comprehension, have a discussion before, during, and after reading.
            Before:

                -Build schema (background knowledge)

-Make predictions
-Ask questions “I wonder why …”

            During:

                -Check predictions

-Make connections to self, another book, or the world

                -Ask questions

-Visualize the story in your mind

            After:

-Retell what happened in the story

                -Think about remaining questions

Some activities you can do at home to support your child’s writing are:

*Model writing for your child. Write notes, thank you cards, to do lists, reminders on the calendar, phone messages.
*Involve your child. Let them help you write; the grocery list, letters to a relative,  captions to pictures, invitations.
*Provide your child with a writing place with plenty of paper, pens, crayons, pencils, stickers, and rubber stamps.
*Play games like junior scrabble.
*Write short notes to your child.
*Have your child keep a journal.
*Write a recipe book together.
