Welcome to

Ms. Cornely's Corner!

SPRING IS HERE!!

Updated 3/19/10

Math

We are currently in the middle of our fraction unit.  We have gone over vocabulary such as numerator, denominator, whole, halves, fourths, eighths, thirds, and sixths. We begun by dividing an area into equal parts and naming those parts with fractions. We moved onto identifying equivalent fractional parts, and are now discovering the different fraction combinations that equal a whole. We discussed different ways to make a whole.  For example, 3/4 + 1/4 = 1  or 2/8 + 2/8 + 4/8 = 1).

We are also still working with our multiplication and division facts! We spend the first 10 minutes of every math class playing engaging games that reinforce automaticity.

Keep up all the wonderful math fact practice at home!

Readers' Workshop

In reading we having been working in our reading groups. Each student is a member of a group that has been designed based on his/her instructional reading level. During our reading group sessions, the students discuss various elements of the text, as well as practice their reading strategies: predictions, connections, visualizations, inference, questioning, etc... We have also done a lot of work with fluency and expression, through poetry and fluency competitions.

Figurative Language and Traditional Literature have been our most recent whole class focuses. The children have been identifying similes, metaphors, idioms, onomatopoeia, and alliteration, as well as using them in their writing.

We have gone over the Traditional Literature umbrella, and all that falls under it: Folktales, Fables, Tall Tales, and Fairy Tales.

Writers' Workshop

We just finished our Literary Nonfiction animal stories! They are SPECTACULAR! Now we are working on a Fantasy story that was introduced to the students by storyteller: Eshu Bumpus. We are having a great time digging into our creative minds and pulling out descriptive details!

In preparation for the MCAS, we have also been building and reinforcing test writing skills. The students have been hard at work completing practice open responses, and understanding "the recipe" for success! :)

Please keep in mind that this website is a work in progress, so check back frequently! :)
