My Home Page Welcome to Miss Cornely's Corner!
Welcome to third grade!
All of us here at Memorial are looking forward to a fun-filled year together! I hope you and your family had a spectacular summer, and are ready to for a real third grade adventure! I have enjoyed getting to know your children from their student surveys, and I am excited to begin our year together! The information I was able to gather from these interest inventories has truly shaped the learning community your child will spend each and every meaningful day in, this school year.
The third grade team has prepared a year full of excitement and challenges for all of our students. The following is a "sneak peak" of what will be happening in 3C this fall:
Mathematics: In third grade, we will begin teaching the first unit of the Investigations Program: “Trading Stickers, Combining Coins”. This unit focuses on a challenging review of addition, subtraction, and the number system. This curriculum also provides your child with many helpful resources and is designed to:
Reading: This year in reading, Memorial School has decided to implement
Scott Foresman’s Reading Street. Reading Street is a Pre-K through Grade 6, reading program that is strongly based on the principals of Natick’s Comprehensive Balanced Literacy Program, as well as the Massachusetts Frameworks. Reading Street and our balanced literacy program both embrace the key areas of literacy instruction, and are designed to help teachers deepen students’ understanding of literature. In conjunction with Reading Street, I will begin the year emphasizing the habits “fabulous readers” practice. Specifically in the area of reading, we will be discussing:
Writing: This fall your writers will get off to an exciting start! We will all begin by accepting the challenge of being the best writers we can be by receiving and personalizing our own writing notebooks! In these special notebooks we will record all the different experiences and topics that spark our interests for writing. We will respond to creative writing prompts, and engage in fun brainstorming activities. We will also be learning a lot from our favorite authors, looking up to them as writing mentors. Your students and I will be sharing our writing with each other on a regular basis, looking up to each other as writing mentors as well. Lastly, something NEW this year will be: cool bookmaking workshops! These workshops will provide a personalized and professional look for our published work!
Science: We will begin with the water cycle. In this unit, your child will learn about the ways in which water reaches and leaves the Earth through a collection of hands-on lessons.
I am looking forward to a productive year filled with new learning. I strongly believe that through working together, and maintaining a comfortable level of communication, we can accomplish our mutual goal of fostering your child’s individual success!
If you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please feel free to contact me at school or via email: ercornely@natickps.org I will always be happy to meet with you! :) As always, we in 3C greatly appreciate your continuous support.
