What's the Scoop? Last history blog up on the website! Check it out! -Portfolio Day on Monday, 6/14Coming up... -"Poetry with Pizzazz" performances on Tuesday, 6/15 -Mental Math Grade Wide Competition on Wednesday, 6/16 -Field Day on Wednesday, 6/16 -Early release on Friday, 6/18 (last day!) LANGUAGE AND LITERACY Genre Study: Our next and final genre study will be traditional literature. Students will be exposed to the elements of the genre through fables, folktales, and tall tales. In addition, they will be focusing on the reading strategy of making inferences to identify the theme or moral of their story. Students will be reading 3 stories in each category and completing story analysis pages to help them understand the important ideas and messages. Then, they will use their sheets to create a final product (story pyramid) to compare and contrast their 3 chosen stories. This genre study will completed in class. You can find the genre study pages under the "My Resources" tab. Core Writing: Our third and final core writing (persuasive) wrapped up this week. The students did excellent work as a class writing to Ms. Nolin about the issue of recess, and independently on a favorite restaurant. Great job Team Enthusiasm! Congratulations to Ashley Tedford and Harley Spring on their first place, most persuasive writing finish! Mrs. McDonough and I will be enjoying visits to The Dolphin and Samba over the next few weeks. In addition, congratulations to Natalie Soens on her runner-up finishing! Novel Unit: Our third and final novel unit of the year will be a Revolutionary War historical fiction study that connects with the history we're studying in class! It will focus on distinguishing between fact vs. fiction, inferring the theme (or author's message), and synthesizing their opinions and ideas about war. Section 5 group meetings will take place this week--be ready! HISTORY Our seventh unit focus on our American government. Students will explore the first attempts at a government and work to understand how and why changes were made. Students will learn about the Constitution, specifically to understand how our government is organized and what each branch is responsible for. We will also look at how and why the Founders added the Bill of Rights to the Constitution. The Unit 7 test will be Thursday, June 10th.
