| This is an introductory course to Technology Education. The structure of this learning area is very different from the traditional classroom that the fifth grader is accustom to. Technology Education is hands-on learning and involves cooperative group work as well as problem solving activities. The student is not confined to a desk in this setting so they must be responsible and make good choices at all times while working in the lab. Students learn skills that are important factors in laying the foundation for more advanced activities in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Three points of emphasis are measuring skills (and learning how to use drafting tools), familiarity with technology in the lab, and learning how to follow safety rules in the manufacturing area. Students are also familiarized with how to maintain a portfolio and classroom journal as well as other classroom procedures that are required in all grades. The standards and benchmarks reflect the basic skills that need to be mastered in order to be successful in future grades. |
